Bill on Economic Crimes and attacks against the environmental on the verge of becoming law

On May 15, 2023, the Congress approved the bill on Economic Crimes and Offense against the Environment (“Bill”), in which the Legislator systematizes around 200 criminal behaviors associated with the socioeconomic and environmental fields, modifying various legal frameworks, and adapting all applicable penalties. Undoubtedly, the Bill constitutes the most substantial and relevant reform that the Penal Code has undergone since its enactment in 1874.
It should be noted that the decision of the Executive Branch on whether it will exercise its right to veto and subsequently the preventive control of constitutionality by the Constitutional Court is still pending.
Given the transcendental importance that this Bill will have for the different sectors of the national economy, Guerrero Olivos will publish a series of informative newsletters regarding the Project of Law, which will be divided by areas or spheres of application. This being the first publication on this topic, a general summary of the main aspects regulated by the Bill will be provided.
